Meet the Visionaries Behind Wild 4X4 Tours

At the heart of Wild 4×4 Tours are Murray and Sam Cairns, a dynamic father-daughter duo whose passion for adventure and love for Southern Africa’s wild landscapes are the driving forces behind their business. Based in the picturesque mountain town of Underberg, they bring a wealth of experience and an unyielding commitment to delivering extraordinary travel experiences.

Murray, a seasoned name in the tourism industry, has been a prominent figure since 2006. His previous venture, a highly regarded tour company specializing in the Sani Pass and Lesotho, set a benchmark for excellence that continues to inspire. Even after selling the company post-COVID, his enduring passion for tourism led him to re-enter the field, eager to craft new, unparalleled adventures for travelers.

Joining him is his daughter Sam. With seven years of international travel and work experience, Sam returned to South Africa, where she immersed herself in the previous family business, working alongside her Dad for a period before selling the company. Her global adventures have fueled her love for remote destinations, making her particularly adept at knowing what makes an exceptional travel experience for anyone with an appetite for adventure.

Together, Murray and Sam form an exceptional team. Murray’s extensive knowledge of 4×4 terrain, his deep connection to the Southern Drakensberg mountains, and over two decades of experience in the tourism industry blend seamlessly with Sam’s firsthand international travel insights, and her passion for off-the-beaten-track adventures.

Their shared vision for Wild 4×4 Tours is simple yet profound: to provide the finest customer service and create unforgettable bucket-list experiences for their guests.

For them, it’s not about being the biggest; it’s about being the best, ensuring every journey with Wild 4×4 Tours is an adventure of a lifetime.

Meet your Guides

Martin

Martin, our main guide at Wild 4×4 Tours, has been sharing his expertise on the Sani Pass and Lesotho for almost 18 years, 10 of which were spent with us in our previous tour company. Born in Stepmore, KZN, he now calls Himeville home, where he lives with his family. Martin is a warm and welcoming presence, known for his friendly nature and deep knowledge of the region—so much so that guests often describe him as a walking guidebook. His passion for sharing Lesotho’s beauty and culture with travelers makes every journey unforgettable. We’re incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our Wild 4×4 Tours family!

Njabulo

Njabulo has been an integral part of our team for nearly 7 years with our previous company and has spent the last two years as a trained guide, specializing in the Sani Pass and Lesotho. Born and raised in the village of Impendle, Njabulo is one of the most down-to-earth individuals, with a beaming smile you’ll recognize from a mile away. He’s known for his incredible kindness and willingness to always go the extra mile, making sure our guests have the best experience possible. Njabulo’s warmth and accommodating nature make him a true joy to journey up the Sani Pass with, and we are equally grateful to have him as part of our family!

Our vehicles

Wild 4×4 Tours takes pride in offering our guests the newest and most comfortable 4×4 vehicles on the Sani Pass. We prioritize the safety and comfort of our guests above all else, ensuring that each vehicle undergoes regular maintenance and meticulous checks. Perfectly suited for individuals and small groups, our fleet currently includes two new Fortuners.

Responsible Tourism & Community Support

Our Sani Pass Tours take you through the breathtaking Ukhlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site, a truly unique environment. Our entire team are deeply committed to protecting this precious landscape and are vigilant in ensuring that no harm comes to it, and will not hesitate to confront or report anyone who is found harvesting plants or animals or littering along the Sani Pass. This is a responsibility we take very seriously.

As a tour company operating in the Sani Pass region, we embrace our role in preserving its natural beauty. Each year, we are committed to actively participating in the Sani Pass Alien Eradication project, helping to maintain the pristine environment we’re so proud to share with our guests.

While the roads department does work towards repairing and maintaining the road, we too as tour operators collaborate with the local community in Lesotho when needed to help improve drainage to prevent wash-aways as well as take part in the annual litter cleanup efforts.

In addition, Wild 4×4 Tours runs a donation program where guests can purchase an optional donation pack to hand-deliver to the locals in Lesotho during their tour. It is a meaningful way to give back and connect with the communities that make this region so special. (Feel free to contact us for more information on how to get involved in the program)
